Frankincense (olibanum) is the resin of the frankincense tree (Boswellia sacra). That grows in the arid regions of West Africa to the Arabian Peninsula between rocks to a height of 1,200 m.
The word comes from Old French "franc encens" (i.e., high quality incense). Today it is a generic name for mixtures of different odorants.
