The Archimedean screw (screwpump) consists of a tube in which a helical screw is mounted to the tube. Both tube and screw are rotated together. Owing to the rotating movement of the helical inclined screw fluids, powders.. are transported upwards in the tube.

vijzelIn a screw conveyor the tube does not rotate. That can boost water higher, but leaks more water.
Since 1630 polder mills with (wood, later iron) screws were used with a diameter of 1 - 2.50 m in deeper dewatering. Before, waterwheels were used. The conveyor beam is located at an angle of 22-30 degrees. Meat or vegetable mills are also screw conveyors. A steel auger can boost the water 4 to 5 m.
