Besides salamanders (Caudata), and caecilians (Gymnophiona) are frogs (Anura) with 88% the largest group of about 6,400 species of amphibians.
kikkerSpecies with long hind legs, smooth skin and a muscular body which live more in aquatic environment are called frog. Species with a rough or warty skin and a stocky body that occur more in the country and jump less with shorter hind legs are called toads.
Frogs jump, toads crawl (general).

Like all reptiles and amphibians frogs must periodically molt. Many frogs eat the shed skin so that nothing is lost.
Only a few species of frogs from rainforests in Asia and Central and South America are poisonous. They, like the poison dart frogs (Dendrobatidae) and some Mantellidae, usually have a bright color as a warning.

Both the English and the scientific name: edible frog or Green Frog, Rana esculenta (tasty frog) attests to its palatability. His thighs (the ‘frog legs‘) are served as a delicacy.

The spring legs or thighs of frogs have a weight of 25 to 35 grams. They are known here from delis and Chinese restaurants.
The gruesome way of harvesting (live uproot or cut off) from imported frog legs should be for everyone a message to never eat them anymore.

Residents of Beveren were once derisively called "Frogbutchers”. They hunted in the evening with a pointed willow stick the fields to catch frogs and sell them as a delicacy.

The bullfrog (grenouille taureau) was imported from the United States for his legs and bred in Italy. The beast can weigh up to two kilo. Dilated and escapees are now seen on many locations. They threaten the local fauna and flora. Here in Europe an adult and mature specimen appears to count 800 grams. The buttocks weigh about one hundred and fifty grams.

All naturally in the Netherlands occurring frogs and toads are protected by the Flora and Fauna Act. Some are as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered on the Dutch Red List.
